La Brea Predators

Random selection of the different predators from the La Brea Tar Pits.

We have one young woman found at the Pits, being roughly 150cm tall (which would be the average) and around her early 20s. This woman isn't exactly her, or from the same culture or timeframe, but more of a nod to her.

Pleistocene Coyotes (Canis latrans orcutti), are an extinct morphotype of coyote. They were a lot larger than today's coyotes, coming in at 18-21 kg, making them almost as big as some modern wolf populations. Their proportions also indicate larger prey.

Dire Wolves (Aenocyon dirus) were large canids (dog family), unrelated to actual wolves as per recent studies. In fact, they were from a South American group, unrelated to modern canids.

American Lions (Panthera atrox) were amongst the largest cats to ever live. This predator would focus mostly in open landscapes, being even more adapted for chasing prey down than modern lions, due to their longer limbs and sleeker build.

Short Faced Bears (Arctodus simus) are amongst the largest synapsid predators to have existed, likely bullying other carnivores off kills, as well as making their own and eating plant matter. The only living short faced bears today, are Spectacled Bears.
